Week 5 Internship Log
This week, my main focus was finalising the school benchmarking study. I reviewed and rechecked the project documentation to ensure the information was accurate, complete, and consistent across the report. This included checking building details, relevant performance benchmarks, recommendations, calculations, formatting, and overall report clarity.
A key activity that I did during this stage of the report writing is strengthening the technical justifications of all the recommendations that I’ve proposed on previous weeks. In the end, I managed to achieve a 70.3% reduction of annual electricity of this school project through several recommendations including; an upgrade for active system’s efficiency, additional windows and skylights to improve daylight and reduce HVAC energy by allowing more useful solar gains, stretching the temperature setpoint while still maintaining comfort, Installing PV array, Improved airtightness, and many more.
This project has been a valuable first introduction to professional ESD consulting project. It has provided me with hands-on exposures to many important aspects of the ESD consulting process, including document review, benchmarking, identifying improvement opportunities, preparing recommendations, and communicating technical findings in a professional reporting style.
While this particular project covers a lot of technical skills that ESD consultant needs to be equipped, such as BESS reporting, energy modelling, Section J compliance checking, daylighting, and blue factor assessment. I still have so much to learn in the coming weeks, and next week will be on moisture modelling on building envelope and upfront carbon assessment. This is an area that I am particularly looking forward as I have never had any hands-on industry case study that requires both skillsets.
